How Does Freelancer Stack Up?

Freelancer Questions Answered

Let Me Tell You About Freelancer!

With over 40 million registered users, freelancer.com is one of the largest freelancing websites out there. When I checked there were over 15,000 jobs posted! It’s great for international clients and freelancers with its sections specifically for jobs in Spanish, Portuguese, German, and French in addition to its vast amount of postings in English.

How much does Freelancer cost?

It’s free to sign up for both freelancers and clients which sounds great to a cheapo Sasquatch like myself. When I looked more closely, I found they take a 3% project fee from the employer as well as a 10% free from the freelancer, which is relatively standard.

How easy is Freelancer to use?

The website is easy to use for all involved. But some parts of the site, in particular the “contest” offering gave this furry friend a bit of a headache. Freelancers submit entries, with payment being awarded to the entries the client deems the best but there are many rules around it. You can always check it out and see if it makes sense to you but I couldn’t understand why someone would take time away from trying to set a trap for yours truly doing unpaid work. Projects are straightforward, thankfully! Overall, signup is fast and easy and anyone can browse job listings without signing up.

How easy is it to setup Freelancer?

If you do sign up, setup is straightforward — after a short questionnaire you are free to set up your freelancer page. If you’re posting a job all you have to do is log in and write your job description. It doesn’t get much quicker or easier than that, simple Sasquatch likes it snappy!

What is the Quality of support at Freelancer?

They offer a pretty comprehensive FAQ’s section on their website. If you can’t find the answer to your question there, they use a live chat support feature staffed with friendly and helpful agents. They do have strict rules however, so if you find yourself on the wrong side of one of them, you may be met with little recourse.

Is Freelancer better for freelancers or people looking to hire freelancers?

Freelancer.com is about equal for both, there are plenty of jobs to choose from for freelancers and plenty of freelancers to choose from for those hiring. The diversity of postings in languages other than English make it the best for international users on both sides and the variety of services and jobs on offer verges on overwhelming. The one caveat for both sides is the number of scammers.

Should You Use Freelancer?

Freelancer.com is one of the biggest sites and setup is quick and easy so if you are looking to hire or get hired relatively painlessly, it is a great option. If you are looking for a job in a language other than English, or in addition to English, it can’t be beat. It’s size draws scammers though, stories abound about being ripped off on both sides so choose your potential clients and freelancers carefully!
